Teacher Feature: Rocking 6th Grade Science

JuneJune

Having a hard time engaging your 6th grade students? Brent White (@CRMS_Science66) is a veteran user of Deck.Toys – 3 years and counting! He teaches 6th grade science in South Carolina (SC), USA and wants to share his experience with everyone.

Deck.Toys: Hi Brent! Glad to have you onboard! Tell us more about yourself.

Brent: I’m a Southern transplant from Dayton, Ohio (OH). I graduated with my Bachelors and Masters from Wright State University in Dayton, OH. I currently teach at CrossRoads Intermediate School in School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties, in Columbia, SC. I am teaching virtually this year through my district’s Flexible Innovative Virtual Education, or FIVE. I teach 6th Grade Science and have been using Deck.Toys for 3 years in my classes!

Deck.Toys: What are the features that you find particularly useful with Deck.Toys?

Brent: I love that students can practice learning Science vocabulary. Science is heavy in new vocabulary and DeckToys provides an environment to practice them. You can make one study set, or a list of terms and definitions, then turn it into mini-games. This blog is really helpful in explaining this concept: https://blog.deck.toys/make-lessons-fun-with-study-set-games/

I also use Deck.Toys to test the students’ mastery concept after the topic is delivered. Here’s a deck I made which uses the in-trend Among Us theme in a form a breakout or an escape room on Simple Machines, that really challenges them to get it right before they can get to the next activity:

Deck.Toys: Your deck looks amazing! How have your students responses been to the platform?

Brent: The students love it! They like that they can go back at any time and go through it to review, if needed.

Deck.Toys: Would you recommend Deck.Toys to other new teachers?

Brent: Most definitely! In fact, Deck.Toys usage is already growing among the Science teachers in my district!

Deck.Toys: Thank you for taking time to share your experience!

Brent: My pleasure!
